The Party

No one was dancing yet and in frustration the DJ changed his tactics from hip hop, which to his utter amazement had failed to get them dancing, to Latin American. He transitoned from one to another with a grim smile thinking that if this didn’t induce them to dance he didn’t know what would.

They say around the way you’ve asked for me
There’s even talk about you wanting me…

Sitting with one leg crossed over the other casually, her silver beaded slipper dangling from her foot nonchalantly, she ran a hand through her hair, vaguely aware that the music was making her body sway slightly. She chatted to the girl sitting next to her about random inconsequentialities, aware of his movements and trying not to look his way. Laughing at something, she tossed her head back and caught his eye. For an instant, she froze mid-smile, her hair falling over her face and held his look.

I must admit that’s what I want to hear
But that’s just talk until you take me there oh…

She smiled, and absorbing his look and the way he was half turned talking inattentively to some girls, she turned back to the erstwhile stranger sitting next to her. A waiter brought a tray of refreshments; tiny sandwiches, crispy, hot spring rolls and mini kebabs. She took a spring roll, dipped it in sauce, and asked the waiter to bring her a glass of coke.

If it’s true don’t leave me all alone out here
Wondering if you’re ever gonna take me there…

“Hey”
A whisper in her ear, sending an excited chill down her spine, made her turn around with a smile.
“Hey”
“Why’re you sitting down?”
“I’m just not in a good mood…” And she explained its cause.
“Ah karma” he said with a sly grin. “You like him, he doesn’t like you…” he left the sentence hanging making her frown. “You gotta feel that.”
“Yeah rub it in. I’m not gonna talk to you.”
“Okay how old are you? Sixteen? I’ve been there, not knowing what to do, I still don’t know what to do…I mean I do know what I want to do with my life, I have a plan for that…But y’know…”
She just looked at him, her hair framing her face, casting soft shadows on her face, the rotating fan behind her periodically making strands fly.
He leaned closer, nearly stopping her heart, and whispered in her ear, “I like you…We’d be hot together, we’re both attractive…” He grinned playfully.
“Oh my god you’re such a narcissist!” She couldn’t help mirroring his infectiously playful grin. They both laughed and after some nondescript chat he got up and walked away, leaving her heart in confusion wanting him to stay beside her.

Tell me what you’re feeling cause I need to know
Girl you’ve gotta let me know which way to go...

Sipping her ice-cold coke, out of the corner of her eye she watched two girls flirting with him and their animated conversation. A pang akin to jealousy, which she denied completely, stung her.

Cause I need to know
I need to know
<i.Tell me baby girl cause I need to know
I need to know
I need to know
Tell me baby girl cause I need to know

My every thought is of this being true
It’s getting harder not to think of you…

The music had insidiously grown inside her and now she felt and irrepressible urge to dance. Her body inconspicuously moved to the sensuous beat and she found herself imagining what it would be like to dance with him…To feel his arms encircling her and coming to rest in the small of her back…To slip her arms around his neck and feel his body close to hers…

Girl I’m exactly where I want to be
The only thing is I need you here with me oh…

She turned in her seat, scanning faces until she found him and met his gaze, invariably on her. Her lips pursed into a purposeful smile, with a hint of mischief, and never dropping her gaze from his face, she got up and walked slowly towards him. Coming to a stop where he was sitting, she bent down and whispered in his ear, her hair falling over her face and brushing against his face flirtatiously, “Wanna dance?”

If it’s true don’t leave me all alone out here
Wondering if you’re ever gonna take me there
Tell me what you’re feeling cause I need to know
Girl you’ve gotta let me know which way to go…

Cause I need to know
I need to know
Tell me baby girl cause I need to know
I need to know
I need to know
Tell me baby girl cause I need to know
